Richard Joseph
Richard Joseph started Richard Joseph SalonSpa in 1991 after nearly two decades of being a stylist. He is a Master Stylist, registered in Alabama, Florida and Tennessee and has completed all levels of Aveda and Pivot Point. Richard’s past work has been seen in Birmingham Magazine, Portico, Elle, Birmingham News, Birmingham Post Herald and Over the Mountain Journal. He has also been a guest on ABC, Fox’s Good Day Alabama, NBC’s Morning Show and CBS.

 

Tonya Jones
Tonya Jones moved to Birmingham in 2004 after working in Mississippi for four years. She received her training in New York at the Wella and Vidal Sassoon Academy and in Dallas, Texas at Toni and Guy Academy. She now serves as a Master Stylist, Cutting Coach, Education Director and is in training to be a Purefessional with Aveda. Tonya specializes in the latest trends in hair color, razor cutting and up-styles. Her past experience includes editorial work for People Magazine, styles for Portico’s Bridal Fair, NBC and Fox News and a sponsor for Mississippi’s Locks of Love.

Kevin Conner
Master Stylist and Colorist
Kevin, a master stylist, joined our staff in 2002. He has since built his business as a hair designer and colorist. Kevin has extensive training in color and color correction. Whether you're looking for a natural look or a progressive edgy look, he can help you achieve it. Kevin's work can be seen on models in Portico Magazine, Health Magazine, Portico Wedding Magazine, at the 2005, 2006 and 2007 Portico Bridal Fair Fashion Show and on NBC's Mid Day Makeover.

Kari Stubblefield
Master Stylist and Colorist
Kari has an exclusive and extensive background in Aveda. She recieved the majority of her training in Atlanta, Boston and Maine. Kari worked for three years in Maine before moving to Birmingham in November 2005. She specializes in both long hair and corrective color. Known for her solid consultations, she takes pride in finding the perfect style for every client. Her work has been seen in Birmingham Weekly and on models at the 2007 Portico Bridal Fair Fashion Show.

Alan Sheffield
Alan began his business in 1982 at Studio and began working with Richard in 1984 after apprenticing under Martha Branum and Gerard. He also studied at Alabama Barber College. His work has been seen in Parisian Advertisements, Lily Heflin Fashion Shows and he has made several appearances, on local television segments, films and magazines.

 

Emily Wright
New Talent Stylist
Emily earned a fine arts degree from the University of New Mexico before moving to live and work in Los Angeles and New Orleans. The Birmingham native returned in 2005 and has been working with master stylists at Richard Joseph SalonSpa since 2006. Emily specializes in flattering, fashion-forward haircuts that are easy to style and maintain.

Teresa Nelson
Teresa has been a master colorist and cosmetologist since 1975, an Aveda color coach since 1994 and certified in Phiten-Yuko Thermal Reconditioning since 2001. Teresa was featured on the Fox evening news when the Thermal Reconditioning was first launched. She updates her training yearly at the Phiten-Yuko headquarters in California for Thermal Reconditioning and attends Aveda color classes seasonally.

Stephen-Michael Elliot
Color Specialist
Stephen-Michael comes to Richard Joseph after studying at the University of Alabama, and after exclusive color study with Paul Mitchell. His previous work includes assisting at the Deloain New York Salon and Spa and also Studio 21 Salon. He intends to specialize in personalized, creative color and cuts; his goal is to have clients not only look beautiful, but to feel beautiful as well.

Angel Alexander
New Talent Stylist and Make Up Artist
Coming from a surgical and medical assistant background, Angel decided to develop her creative and artistic inclinations at RJSS. She looks forward to many years here.

Sumetri Martin
Sumetri is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham with a bachelors in Education. After years of being an educator, she decided to pursue her passion and join the beauty industry. She plans to specialize in hair color, cutting, hair extensions, and natural hair maintenance. Sumetri feels it is crucial to educate clients on taking care of their hair because healthy beautiful hair should continue beyond the salon. She continues to enhance her skills through ongoing Aveda classes, seminars, and one-on-one training sessions with top industry professionals. Sumetri prides herself on listening to her clients and creating a style in sync with their individual lifestyle. "To be a stylist you must Love All Hair. Each head of hair posses its own challenges. Limiting yourself limits growth."

Kay Brom
Kay came to Richard Joseph SalonSpa shortly after she moved to Alabama from California. She is certified in clinical massage and neuromuscular therapy. Kay helped to open the Richard Joseph ‘Spa’ in January 2001. Kay has done work with Extreme Makeover Home Edition, Red Cross, Southeastern CYAC Association, USA Olympic Water Polo team, Universal Studios and with Hospice Care. She is enormously talented at identifying and releasing negative emotions that are stored in the body.

Salli Katz
Massage Therapist
After earning her certification in both massage and neuromuscular therapy from the Alabama School of Massage Therapy in 1997, Salli earned a bachelor's degree in biology from UAB in 2003. Her ten years of massage experience and her comprehensive knowledge of anatomy and physiology make for an outstanding massage.

Jennifer Manat
An original member of the Richard Joseph Spa team, Jennifer Manat is our Skin Care Specialist and also doubles as a Massage Therapist. She studied at the University of Alabama and Red Mountain Institute for the Healing Arts. She has worked as a medical assistant in a dermatology clinic and as a medical spa technician in a laser clinic before joining Richard Joseph SalonSpa in 2001. Manat is dedicated to protecting her clients' skin from sun damage and environmental pollutants, restoring its balance, for healthy-looking luminous skin.

Alissa Williams
Alissa graduated at the top of her class at the Skinatics School of Aesthetics. She joined Richard Joseph in 2006 and looks forward to many years of development as an esthetician. She enjoys working with Aveda and furthering her knowledge of skincare.

Susan Payton
Susan began her career at Richard Joseph SalonSpa in 2000 as a chemical assistant, and has since completed the required hours for an apprenticeship and obtained her cosmetology license. She has attended various Aveda classes covering such topics as aromology, hair color, hand and foot relief. Susan also performs manicures, pedicures and wet room treatments in our spa.

Angela King
Angela specializies in bridal, stage and other special event make up applications.  She has received exclusive Aveda training.  Her work has been featured in Portico Magazine and Portico Bridal Show 2006.
